According to Yahoo News, John Kerry continues to put forward the ridiculous notion that only combat veterans are qualified to serve as Commander in Chief. Though still unable to reconcile this new position with their former policy of embracing admitted draft dodger Bill Clinton, Democrats led by Kerry, have declared themselves to be the party that is strong on defense.
Yahoo! News - Kerry Says Democrats Have Bush 'On the Run'The four-term Massachusetts senator and decorated Vietnam war veteran also renewed his criticism of Republicans "who never fought in a war" but think they have "a leg up" over Democrats on defense.
As a former Democrat I find it impossible to believe this preposterous assertion. I know for a fact that Democrats don't believe a word of it. They also know that no one else believes it either. That's why, despite Kerry’s taunt of, “Bring it on!,” Democrats are trying to declare any debate over defense issues off limits by accusing Bush of opening old, psychological, Viet Nam wounds by discussing Kerry’s history of anti-war activism and by accusing Republicans of questioning his patriotism whenever his record of voting against key defense bills arises.
The fact is that Republicans do not doubt Kerry’s patriotism, they question his wisdom and judgment.
Marc Racicot, Bush's campaign chairman, said it was "simply not true" that Republicans were attacking Kerry's patriotism.
"But he has refused repeatedly to explain his record on voting to cut the very weapons systems that are helping us fight and win the war on terror, and that's what this discussion is about."
As frustrating as these assertions by the Democrats are, they are just smoke and mirrors designed very carefully to draw attention away from the real issue; John Kerry is weak on defense and the paper trail generated by his long tenure in the Senate proves it. We must not be distracted, our message is true, our message is good.
