Left wing media, here and abroad, continues to get it wrong. They insist that President Bush has denounced the SwiftVet ads.
International Herald Tribune:
Bush calls for halt to anti-Kerry ad
He has done no such thing. What he has done is denounce 527 organizations and their ads wholesale. Strangely, the way-left L.A. Times got it right with their headline, Bush Assails TV Attack Ads.
LAT also managed to call Mr. Bush “nuanced,” which has to be a first. Though when John Kerry is nuanced it means subtle and inciteful whereas apparently when the president is being nuanced it means “sneaky”
Bush's initial comments on the anti-Kerry ad campaign by a small group of Vietnam veterans were sufficiently nuanced that reporters pressed him and his aides to be more specific. It's also a stretch to call 250 of Mr. Kerry's closest associates in the Swift Boats "a small group of Vietnam veterans."
Here is a transcript of the president’s comments.
The Washington Post
QUESTION: When you say that you want to stop all...
BUSH: All of them.
QUESTION: So, I mean...
BUSH: That means that ad, every other ad.
BUSH: Absolutely. I don’t think we ought to have 527s.
I can’t be more plain about it. And I wish -- I hope my opponent joins me in saying -- condemning these activities of the 527s. It’s -- I think they’re bad for the system. That’s why I signed the bill, McCain-Feingold.
I’ve been disappointed that for the first, you know, six months of this year, 527s were just pouring tons of money -- billionaires writing checks. And, you know, I spoke out against them early. I tried to get others to speak out against them as well. And I just don’t -- I think they’re bad for the system.
