In an almost unbelievable display of constitutional ignorance by an official sworn to protect the constitution, Representative Jim Davis (D-Fla.) called the action taken to protect Terri Shiavo last night by the house "a clear threat to our democracy."

Congress, he said, was ignoring the constitutional separation of power and "is on the verge of telling states, courts, judges and juries that their opinions, deliberations and decisions do not matter."
Davis' analysis turns logic on its head. Far from ignoring the separation of powers, congress is insisting upon it. Judicial activism in America has reached epidemic proportions and congress is simply reasserting its prerogatives in our system; the legislative branch is reclaiming its right to make the laws from the radical judges who have usurped it.
That Democrats can muster the hypocrisy to call the protection of a disabled person's rights a threat to our democracy, when they know better, simply so they can present opposition to everything Republicans initiate, shows the depths to which they have sunk.
Nearly half of the Democrats present voted to pass the bill, but the cynicism that animates Democratic leadership has utterly consumed them; my contempt for them has never been greater.
