Michael Crichton died yesterday at the age of 66. My condolences to his family and friends.
Crichton was a scientist who wrote science fiction. He wrote a remarkable number of very successful novels—Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, The Terminal Man and many more. I've blogged about Crichton before here, here, and here (the link in this post has "expired" so here is the wonderful "Aliens Caused Global Warming" speech). One of this site's first links from a major newspaper was to an article about his novel State of Fear, which has been called his best. Yet you will not find it on the list in this short obituary by the AP. No doubt because its subject matter is taboo to their left leaning sensibilities.
State of Fear dealt a body blow to the Global Warming bullies, showing their tactics and their science for what they were: thuggish nonsense. And he did it while being thoroughly entertaining.
One thing was obvious about Crichton, he was not looking for a particular outcome to the Global Warming issue, what mattered was that the result was come to scientifically. The scientific method was, to him as to many of us, a thing of beauty. And the Global Warming pushers were sullying the scientific method. That could not be allowed.
His wit and insight will be missed.
